  • Parcel thefts from home: here’s how to prevent them
Here's how to put an end to package theft at home! It can be stressful to receive packages at home while we are away. Left on the doorstep, unattended, they are easy to steal. But buying in-store isn't always a convenient option. What to do to protect yourself? Online shopping is becoming more and more common. In Quebec, approximately 20% of purchases are made over the Internet. Clothing, electronics, furniture, beauty products, decorative accessories, ready-to-eat meal boxes… almost everything can be delivered to your home. Unfortunately, parcel thefts are on the rise. How do the culprits do it? Who are these thieves? Some malicious people specialize in package theft. They roam neighborhoods – especially those with high value homes – looking for boxes left on doorsteps. It's that simple! As for condominium buildings whose delivery people have left the packages in the vestibule, the culprits can infiltrate after a tenant or ring the bell until someone opens the door. And sometimes it is the residents who steal parcels from their neighbors. Prevention tips Have your packages delivered to work. More and more bosses agree that their employees give their place of work as a delivery address. It is sometimes a little more management, especially in large companies where there are several employees, but it is worth the cost for them. Have it delivered to a relative or friend. Your sister-in-law is on maternity leave? Your father is retired? Does your friend work from home? You could ask him or her if he or she is ok with you using their address and picking up your property later. Require a signature. Some companies offer delivery with electronic signature from the outset. This is a way for them to secure the transaction. So, if you are not at home, the package will go to a warehouse waiting for you to pick it up. If the company you are dealing with does not offer it on their site when purchasing, contact them. Important: According to the Consumer Protection Office, a company that includes delivery in the transaction has an obligation to ensure that you get your purchases. But if you have opted for the non-signature clause, it can discharge itself of any responsibility in the event of theft. Have it delivered directly to the Purolator center closest to you: and picked it up following your email notification Buy a parcel locker. When you live in a building with many apartments, it is possible to get a secure parcel locker. On its website, Canada Post explains the procedure to follow. If you are a victim of theft, the first step is to contact your local police department. Then, do not hesitate to contact the company where you made your purchase to report the situation. Many have insurance in case of breakage or theft and can offer a refund or the sending of another package.
