How to prevent your snowshoes from being stolen

Receiving packages at home can be a source of stress, especially when you're not there. Packages left unattended on your doorstep are easy targets for thieves. However, shopping in physical stores is not always the most convenient solution. So, what can you do to protect your valuable deliveries?Say goodbye to home package theft.

Online shopping is becoming increasingly common. In Quebec, around 20% of purchases are made online. Whether you're ordering clothing, electronics, furniture, beauty products, decorative accessories, or ready-to-eat meal kits, almost everything can be delivered directly to your doorstep. Unfortunately, package theft is on the rise.

But how do package thieves operate?

Package thieves are malicious individuals who specialize in stealing packages. They roam neighborhoods, especially those with high-value homes, looking for packages left on doorsteps. It's as simple as that. For condominiums where delivery people leave packages in the foyer, thieves may sneak in after a tenant or ring the bell until someone opens the door. Sometimes, it's even residents themselves who steal packages from their neighbors.

Here are some prevention tips:

  1. Have your packages delivered to your workplace: More and more employers allow their employees to use their workplace as a delivery address. This may require a bit more management, especially in larger companies, but it's a smart choice to ensure the safety of your packages.

  2. Ask a trusted person to receive your packages: If a family member, friend, or neighbor is often at home, ask them if they'd be willing to receive your packages for you to pick up later.

  3. Request a signature: Some companies offer delivery with an electronic signature, providing an extra layer of security. If you're not at home, the package will be kept in a secure location until you can pick it up. If this option isn't initially offered at the time of purchase, contact the company to request it. It's essential to note that, according to the Office of Consumer Protection, a company that includes delivery in the transaction has an obligation to ensure you receive your purchases. However, if you opt for a delivery without a signature, the company may disclaim responsibility in case of theft.

  4. Choose delivery to the nearest Purolator center: You'll receive an email notification and can pick up your package at your convenience.

  5. Purchase a secure package locker: If you live in a building with multiple apartments, it's possible to acquire a secure package locker. Canada Post explains the process on its website.

If you fall victim to a package theft, the first step is to contact your local police service. Then, don't hesitate to contact the company where you made your purchase to report the situation. Many companies offer insurance for damage or theft and may provide you with a refund or send another package."
